Students for Common Ground (S4CG) is a movement that promotes non-adversarial approaches to social conflicts on high school and college campuses, by encouraging dialogue and understanding between individuals on all sides of a debate. The movement works both nationally and locally as well as with the individual and the collective. S4CG's model is based upon the work of its parent organization Search for Common Ground (www.sfcg.org), which works to transform the way community leaders and citizens deal with conflict: away from adversarial approaches and toward cooperative solutions.

Students for Common Ground was formed by a team of young, committed, visionary leaders from across the ethnic, racial, and ideological spectra to help create a culture of collaborative problem solving. The intellectual environment on campuses encourages open discussion of issues and S4CG seeks to use this atmosphere for creative and positive impact. S4CG hopes to change the status quo by promoting unity through dialogue.

The solutions drawn are not compromises; finding common ground is not the same as settling for the lowest common denominator - it's generating a new "highest common denominator." It's not about having two sides meet in the middle, but having them identify something greater than themselves, that together they can aspire to and work toward. When people who really care about an issue come together and bring their ideas to the table, new options can be generated and new solutions can be found. Through conversations and events that create a cooperative, positive atmosphere, S4CG aims to find such resolution.
